Garbage

From Freetekno

Jump to: navigation, search

The garbage situation at the end of the weekend was pretty appaling in some places. Many areas were totally trashed, especially the spot where the thugs had previously camped out. Most of the participants were helpful and sanitary about it though.

It's a real shame that the town dump does not recycle. I talked to the dump master and he told me that the place had been open for 30 years. I asked how much longer it would have and he said he didn't know, but it was getting pretty full. And to think, all the]at nasty garbage (and probably a fair share of batteries) just dumped on the naked earth so close to the wetland and so many lakes. No concrete pan to catch the leechate, no tarp to salvage the useful methane, just waste solids lieing on the open ground, seeping toxic water into water supply for most of southern Ontario. I hope in the future we can work with the locals to effect some positive change in this area, and even create many new income sources. There's so much wealth in waste!

(they have a tendency to burn the garbage away at that dump, otherwise it'd be much much fuller at this point. that's not really comforting environmentally, but it does happen - orbz)

[edit] Another Garbage Story

I filled a 7 seater van to the roof with garbage, of which 3 bags were from our camp area of 11 people and 2 theme camps. We took 3 chairs, 2 styrofoam coolers, several blankets, SO much recycling. So much of what was taken to the dump could've been reused, but there was just NO room in my van or the HARDER bus (as we were the last ones out) to take it all. Lots of stuff was just left in the bush, along the side of the road etc. I think that this was a pretty disgusting display. The environmental impact that this festival had in garbage alone was pretty astounding. The idea is to leave no trace, leave a small ecological footprint. So many came with so much waste (especially small, individual water bottles). I think next time we can maybe spread the word about buying BIG containers for water and refilling a cup/reusable bottle. I found 4 pairs of shoes!! JEEPERS!!! There are pictures that exist of the GIANT garbage pile that was at the entrance to the dump. This whole garbage thing is preventable. easily. if people just take SOME responsibility of packing carefully, with reusable containers and take at least SOME garbage out. maybe a bag or two each car? next year, if i'm hauling garbage again (please let me not!!) I hope there is much less of it, and the stuff that I am hauling IS actually garbage and not something that could be reused/recycled etc.

full of garbage
